Committee on Health cautions against poor coordination in establishment of KMTC campuses

The Departmental Committee on Health in a Session chaired by Lamu County MP, Hon. Ruweida Obo this afternoon met with officials from the Ministry of Health led by Dr. Mariga; Officials from the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) led by the Ag. CEO, Dr. Kelly Oluoch and the National Government- Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF)Board led the CEO, Mr. Yusuf Mbuno over the establishment of KMTC campuses across the Country, at the English point Hotel,Mombasa County.

Addressing Members during the meeting, the CEO of the NG-CDF Board, Mr. Yusuf Mbuno informed the Committee that they have been able to establish new campuses in 69 Constituencies. They also reported that they have improved the infrastructure of 14 other existing campuses.

During the deliberations, the Committee noted that bursary support to students in KMTC campuses has seen many students become motivated to take up medical courses.

The Members however cautioned that poor coordination in the establishment of the campuses may lead to duplication of efforts, with a possibility of campuses being established within close range especially in urban Constituencies and in rural areas where there is a high population density.

To streamline this process, officials of the KMTC and the NG-CDF boards agreed to collaborate in the future in enforcing adherence to the minimum requirement for the establishment of new KMTC campuses in the Country.

This engagement forum was held in appreciation of the important role that KMTC plays in strengthening health service delivery through training and development of qualified health care providers throughout the Country.

Further, cognizant of the fact that physical facilities and human resource requirements are crucial in the training and development of competent professionals for the ailing health sector, the Committee is keen to streamline the development of KMTC colleges across the country.

The Hon. Members present during the engagement were Hon. (Capt.) Ruweida Obo (Lamu County), Hon. (Dr.) James Murgor (Keiyo North), Hon. (Dr.) Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), and Hon. Joyce Emanikor(Turkana County).
