Committee on Public Accounts Inspection Visits of Government projects

The Public Accounts Committee in the National Assembly kicked off a week-long process of Inspection Visits of various Government projects including Law Courts and Police Posts in Kisumu, Nyamira, Kisii, Vihiga, Kakamega, Siaya, Lodwar and Turkana Counties. The visits, are as a result of Audit Queries raised by the Office of the Auditor General in the manner in which these facilities, funded by the World Bank and Government, have been put up.

In a Sub-Committee led by Rarieda MP Hon Otiende Amolo, the legislators visited the Kisumu County Commissioner’s office, where they had a briefing on the Status of the Kisumu Rehabilitation Home (Juvenile Prison). The Facility which was completed in 2014 had Audit Queries raised about the delays issuance of the Land’s title deed from the County Government to the Department of Child Services.

The Sub-Committee visited the newly Constructed Nyamira Law Courts and Oyugis Law Courts, where despite the structures being complete, the Auditor General had highlighted various issues which the MPs confirmed to be true during inspection. Some of the issues noted were delays in completion, poor water piping and storage facilities that cause leakage, congested courtrooms, among other issues.

At Nyamarambe Police Post in Kisii County, the Committee observed that the intended police residential unit was incomplete despite having been reported as complete. The issues noted were: no sewerage system, no electricity, cracked walls, plumbing incomplete, and no rails on the staircase.

The Sub-Committee continues its inspection visits in Vihiga and Siaya Counties today.
