Must read

Caution recommend the authorities to the people of Colorado of the United States , after detecting plague in animals and the death of a child.

Authorities in the US state of Colorado are urging citizens to be vigilant about animals, following the detection of mammalian and flea plague in six counties and the first death from the disease since 2015.

According to The Denver Post, the state did not publish the full list of counties, but said one of them was La Plata. The ten-year-old boy who died earlier in the month from the plague lived in that county.

The plague is caused by bacteria and is usually transmitted through the bites of infected fleas. Squirrels and rodents carry fleas and often infect themselves, so close contact with them should be avoided, the health ministry said in a statement.

Colorado reported 22 human cases from 2015 to 2020. Nearly half were in La Plata County.

Plague has a high mortality rate if left unchecked, but antibiotics are effective against it, especially in the early stages. Symptoms include fever, headache, swelling, etc.
