Israeli police say victim attacked with a knife in Jerusalem’s Old City
A Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli police when he tried to stab them in the Old City of Jerusalem, police and the hospital where he was taken said.
The incident comes as tensions rise again in the region following the escape earlier this week of six Palestinians from an Israeli prison.
Palestinian militant groups have called on Palestinians to join a “day of rage” in support of the detainees, and Israeli security forces are continuing their manhunt to locate the fugitives.
In its announcement, the police report that the “attempt attack with a knife” was made near the Lions Gate, one of the entrances to Jerusalem’s old town.
“Police and guards responded by shooting” the perpetrator, a 50-year-old resident of East Jerusalem, resulting in serious injuries. The Hadassah hospital where he was taken later announced his death.
