Drunk man drowns in water well

A drunk man died after he drowned in a water well at Nthumburi village in Meru County.

Eyewitnesses identified the victim as Isaiah of the said village.

An eyewitness said the victim was assisting another member of the community in digging the well.

“Isaiah dug the well until he reached a level where he realized there was too much carbon and stopped digging. Another man arrived and continued digging where Isaiah had left off. When he discovered there was an excess of carbon, he called out for help. Members of the community approached Isaiah who rushed to the well to rescue him,” she said.

She said that when Isaiah failed to rescue him, members of the community threw a rope inside, which the other man managed to grab and use to save himself, leaving Isaiah behind. She said he was later pulled out of the well dead.

According to a resident, a fire and rescue team was called, but it was unable to reach the well due to the poor condition of the roads.

“The rescue team abandoned their vehicle and arrived with only a small amount of equipment couldn’t pull him out of the well. He was still alive when the team arrived on the scene,” said a resident.

Mburu, the owner of the well, said he realized something was wrong when the man got inside the well and remained silent. He said that when Isaiah went to his rescue, he fell silent as well. He said It’s been a month since the digging began.
