Stephen Wang’ondu, a Nyeri billionaire accused of recruiting hitmen to kill his son, died after being released from prison.
Stephen Kinini Wang’ondu, 74, died on Friday at the Outspan Hospital in Nyeri Town after being charged with murder in the death of his son Daniel Mwangi and four others.
Wang’ondu was admitted to Mt. Kenya Hospital for suspected Covid-19 complications before being transferred to Outspan Hospital a week ago after his health worsened, according to his lawyer Mahugu Mbarire.
The businessman, who has been detained since his arrest in early January, is accused of planning the murder of his 32-year-old son on the night of December 31, 2020 in Mwiyogo village, Kieni East Sub-county, Nyeri.
The father allegedly tried to file an insurance claim, according to detectives.
They accused the businessman of recruiting and paying four hitmen Ksh160,000 in connection with the assassination attempt.
He allegedly filed an insurance claim for Mwangi’s death a few days later.
His son’s body was discovered at his home in Mweiga city, lying in a pool of blood. The killers took nothing from him, so police ruled robbery out.
