A 5.9-magnitude earthquake has shaken the capital, Dushanbe, in eastern Tajikistan this morning, according to authorities in the central Asian country.
“The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 07:14 local time (05:14 Greek time) was located 165 kilometers northeast of Dushanbe. “Five people lost their lives,” the press service of the country’s emergency response committee said.
“Dozens of houses were destroyed,” he added.

The quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and had a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the state-run Khovar news agency, which quoted the country’s academy as saying.
The emergency response committee said the dead were residents of a village in Tajikistan. “Homes and power grids were partially damaged” in three villages in the area, 220 km east of Dushanbe.
Tajik President Imomali Rakhmon has ordered the establishment of a commission of inquiry led by the prime minister, Russian media reported.
