Must read

The cause of his death is unknown – Bouteflika suffered a stroke in 2013 and resigned in 2019

Former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika passed away on Friday at the age of 84, state television reported.

“Former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has died ,” the headline read on state television, citing a statement from the presidency.

The report on ENTV, citing a statement from the office of current President Abdelmajid Tambun, did not provide a cause of death or other details.

Bouteflika had suffered a stroke in 2013 that had weakened him greatly. Concerns about his health, kept secret by Algerian citizens.

After his fall in April 2019 , under pressure from staff amid mass protests, Abdelaziz Bouteflika had retired and been isolated at his home, where he was receiving ongoing medical care, in the Geralda district of western Algeria.

His downfall became inevitable after days of mass mobilizations sparked by his intention to claim a fifth consecutive five years.
