Forty-six people die in a fire in an apartment building

A total of 46 people have been killed and 41 injured in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung, the government announced today.

The fire broke out in a 40-year-old building in the Yancheng district of Kaohsiung in the early hours of the morning, and was extinguished around dawn.

The Kaohsiung Fire Department said it could confirm that there were 46 dead after a search of the building was completed.

Mayor Chen Chi-mai clarified that this building was partially abandoned, while in the past it housed restaurants, karaoke centers and a cinema.

The government is investigating the cause of the fire as well as the case that it was due to arson.
