It is forbidden to sell them near schools and churches

The Hungarian government today ordered bookstores to cover the covers of children’s books believed to promote homosexuality, stepping up restrictions on Prime Minister Victor Orb .n, who is on a trajectory of conflict with the European Union and human rights groups.

The decree also stipulates that all books that promote gender reassignment or contain “explicit sexual references” should be “covered”. Bookstores will have to sell them separately, while it is completely forbidden to sell them within a radius of 200 meters from churches and schools .

The mandate is the first in a series of directives to implement a law passed by parliament in June that bans schools from using material believed to promote homosexuality or gender reassignment.

The European Union has launched a process of sanctions against Hungary over this law, which it says discriminates against the European values of tolerance and individual freedom. The Orban government argues that the law aims to protect children and that it is up to parents to take care of their sexual education.

Many human rights organizations say the law mistakenly confuses pedophilia and pornography with the issues of the LOATKI community. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it a “shame”.

A poll by Ipsos last month found that 46% of Hungarians are in favor of same-sex marriage.
