THARAKA GOVERNOR NITHI Muthomi Njuki has called on the central government to allocate sufficient funds to fight the famine and will consider postponing the 2022 general elections if the drought continues in the country.
Mr Njuki said the money allocated for the election should be used to buy food aid to help starving Kenyans.
He made the remarks at the Nairobi Ndogo market in the Chuka / Igambang’ome constituency after distributing a check for Sh23 million to 18 business groups through the Agriculture and Climate Change (KCSAP) project.
Mr Njuki said although President Uhuru Kenyatta declared the drought a national catastrophe earlier this year, adequate efforts had not been made to ensure that the victims were provided with food and water assistance.
“The government’s first goal should be to fight hunger which continues to affect many Kenyans. Elections and other requirements should come later, ”he said. Mr. Bee.
The politician lamented that politicians have been continuing their campaigns despite the famine, urging the Devolution Ministry in collaboration with the Council of Governors (COG) to come up with a plan to reach out to those in need of emergency food aid.
He complained that his county was not on the list of eligible recipients despite the Drought Authority (NDMA) indicating that thousands of residents were facing starvation.
Mr Njuki said it was the last rain in Tharaka and Igambang’ombe in March the population has not received a good harvest.
