West Pokot Speaker Catherine Mukenyang was locked out of the Assembly premises Tuesday morning even after the High Court in Eldoret reinstated her.
Mukenyang turned up to preside over the County Assembly business but was denied access to the chambers despite having stay orders allowing her to continue working until a case she has filed challenging her impeachment is heard and determined.
The Speaker arrived at the Assembly in an Administration Police vehicle escorted by armed police officers but was barred by County Assembly sergeant at arms who said they don’t recognise the court order.
Attempts by the Speaker who was impeached on 7th September to plead with the Assembly security officers didn’t bear fruits as she was forced to spend over 30 minutes outside the gate, as a section of MCAs who were inside the Assembly told her off to keep off the premises.
She said she has not delegated her duties to any one, adding that she will seek direction from the court on way forward.
Nominated MCA Selina Longiro defended the speaker saying it was unfortunate that MCAs had decided tp ignore a valid court order.
Mnagei ward MCA Benjamin Araule on the other hand called for sobriety saying the standoff is a waste of time and the court’s decision should be respected.
