Israel: Airstrikes in Gaza after the use of balloons with incendiary devices

Must read

The casualties hit an uninhabited area in the northern part of the enclave and a training ground for the Islamic Hamas movement.

The Israel  launched air strikes in the Gaza Strip  after throwing balloons with custom improvised incendiary devices from the Palestinian enclave to its territory caused fires in the bushes.

The strikes, which did not cause any casualties , targeted an uninhabited area in the northern part of the enclave and a training ground for the Hamas-led  Gaza Strip in Khan Yunis (south), Palestinian security sources told AFP.

Israel had earlier announced that it was halving the fishing zone off the Gaza Strip.

“It has been decided to reduce the permitted fishing zone in the Gaza Strip from 12 to 6 nautical miles,” said the military wing of the Israeli Army Liaison Office, which handles relations with the Palestinians (Cogat).

“The decision was made due to the firing of balloons with adapted explosive devices from the Gaza Strip to Israel, which is a violation of Israeli sovereignty,” Cogat said in a statement.

He warned that “Hamas, which is responsible for its activities in the Gaza Strip and for all its actions from the Gaza Strip to the State of Israel, must suffer the consequences of the atrocities committed against the citizens of the State of Israel.”

Earlier yesterday, Sunday, fires that had broken out in the bushes extinguished at three points in a small area in the Eshkol region, “the statement of the Israeli fire brigade stating that” an expert concluded that the fires were caused by balloons with custom ordnance “.

These balloons are targeting rural areas around the Palestinian enclave where some two million people have been living under Israeli blockade for 15 years.

The fishing zone and imports are used by Israel to punish or compensate the Gaza Strip depending on the security situation.

Thus, on July 12, Israel announced the expansion of the fishing zone and the expansion of permitted imports into the Gaza Strip following a “recent” return to “calm”.

The permitted fishing zone before the conflict that erupted in May was 15 nautical miles, but Israel reduced it during hostilities.

Sporadic incidents – balloon launches with improvised explosive devices from Gaza and Israeli air strikes in retaliation – have taken place since the fragile ceasefire ended, ending a sudden 11- to 11-day war on May 10. .

Israel had recently responded to the night-time airstrikes targeting alleged Hamas positions.

The last time the Palestinian enclave dropped these devices had set fire to Israel on July 2.
