An armed police force intervened on Saturday in Chogoria Ward, Maara constituency, Tharaka Nithi County, to prevent a recruiting drive by The Service Party (TSP) membership.
TSP leader Mwangi Kiunjuri presided over the meeting, which included a slew of contenders vying for various seats in the next General Elections.
To disperse the leaders who had attended the neeting, police used tear gas canisters.
Officers also fired tear gas canisters at journalists who were interviewing the lawmakers, causing the speech to be cut short.
Since then, Kiunjuri has decried the interruption, accusing the government of political intolerance.
“As we speak, there are already people who are holding meetings in other places…including in the house of a Member of Parliament that is already going on,” said Kiunjuri.
During the meeting, according to the former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, all Ministry of Health requirements were followed.
