Sewage water flowing on roads is a common sight for the people of the Meru town.
People living downstream are facing countless problems including lack of access to clean drinking water, sewage water on roads and risk of water-borne diseases among others.
While speaking to BaiteTv, the area resident decried the regular sewage leakages which they say have rendered the area inhabitable due to foul smell. The residents demanded an immediate fixing of the sewerage system.
“I implore Governor Kiraitu to fix the sewerage system during his term because there is no guarantee he will be re-elected. As a result of the sewerage spill, children and those working alongside the road may become ill,” said an area resident.
Another resident said: “I became accustomed to the stench emanating from the sewerage spill. Because we are so close to the sewerage spill, it is difficult to work and for customers to buy from us.”
A third resident cautioned residents from consuming the water.”Residents who consume water from the Kathita river should stop immediately because the water is highly contaminated. Especially those located downstream, in particular,” he said
