Two people have died on Monday while two others were critically injured in a road accident along the Nairobi – Mombasa highway at Still Plant area in Athi River.
Athi River subcounty police commander Anderson Njagi said the two died on the spot in an accident that involved a lorry and trailer at around 6am.
Njagi said the lorry was travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa, while the trailer was headed in the opposite direction leading to a head on collision.
He blamed the lorry driver for the accident.
“The driver didn’t follow the instructions to divert. He proceeded against the traffic. So, there was a head on collision. The lorry’s driver died on the spot with his turn boy, the passenger was seriously injured and has been rushed to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River together with the trailer’s driver who broke his leg,” Njagi said.
The bodies were removed to Shalom Community Hospital while vehicles towed to Athi River police station pending inspection.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
The police boss cautioned motorists against flouting traffic rules while on the road.
“Let the drivers follow road signs and instructions. That driver didn’t follow instructions to divert,” Njagi said.
Njagi also cautioned drivers especially those who drive long distance heavy commercial vehicles against driving while fatigued.
“Let drivers stop and rest when tired instead of driving on and causing accidents. I am appealing to lorry drivers especially along Mombasa Road to be cautious during this time that the road is under construction,” Njagi said.
