Spanish police have shot dead a man who attacked a police officer with a large kitchen knife on the outskirts of southern Madrid, police said.
Police were called after the man, about 40 years old, started threatening passers-by by waving a knife, outside a hospital in the Viaverde district.
“The man attacked a police officer, who was forced to shoot him,” the spokesman said.
“As the attack continued, other police officers also opened fire.”
The man, described as a sub-Saharan African national known to authorities, succumbed to his injuries on the spot. He has had a criminal record of violence against police officers since 2020 and appears to be experiencing psychological problems, according to a spokesman.
