MERU COUNTY— A man was arrested by police after failing at committing suicide twice in Igembe.
Brian or Mzungu, the 23-year-old Mutoroene resident, attempted to end his life with drugs he had on him after going out for a drink early in the morning during working hours.
Colleagues pursued him and advised him to return to work because he had been drinking during working hours.
After a while, he attempted to he drown himself.
“He was extremely drunk and was unable to return to his job, which was looking for pasture,” said Joshua Kaimenyi.
“It lasted only three days after he was reinstated.
“He had previously left the work, but when he returned, the conditions were to refrain from drinking, which he stated he would comply with.
“When asked why he went to drink despite having vowed never to drink again, he expressed a desire to commit suicide,” he said.
“When we took the medicine away from him, he went ahead and attempted to drown himself,” said Wanjala, Brian’s friend from Bungoma.
“When we asked him why he wanted to commit suicide, he said it was because a woman had given him alcohol and bhang,” she said.
“We tried to talk to him when he came drunk, but he couldn’t listen, said another eyewitness.
“He escaped when went to get his boss to come and check on him.
“We searched for him but were unable to locate him.
“He’d already boarded a motorcycle and left by the time we arrived at the road.
“After a while, he returned and went straight to the river, where he drowned himself.
“We rushed to the scene and, with the assistance of a group of young men, pulled him out of the water.
“We brought him home and tied his hands together with a rope.
“Brian’s employer said that it would be better for him to commit suicide in his hometown.
“He stated that he would not have hired the suspect if he had known he was planning to commit suicide.
“We had never seen him in that condition before, but when we asked him about it, he said that he had been given a type of alcohol that caused him to lose his senses.
“I advise people to drink responsibly and to always consider how they want their future to be.
The suspect is a young man who has not yet married, but he has prioritized alcohol in his mind.
“I also urge those who sell alcohol to avoid selling too much to their customers, and if a point comes when the customer has had enough, they should stop selling it to them, even if they want money,” he said.
“I had arrived to deliver a parcel to the employer when he informed me that Brian intended to commit suicide after taking medicines he had on him,” said another eyewitness.
“I delivered the medicines to the officer in charge of CID.
“He asked me to keep an eye out for the suspect and notify him when he returned.
“When I returned, I was informed that the suspect had returned and intended to drown himself.
“I informed the officer, who instructed me to tie the suspect’s hands together with a rope and wait for the police to arrive.
“I strongly advise young men to abstain from alcohol and to plan for the future.
“They should be aware that they have a lot of work to do on this planet and that they are nowhere close to finishing it.
“When the 26-year-old suspect took alcohol and attempted suicide, it indicates that he has no regard for his future.
“He hasn’t yet had a child and hasn’t begun to educate it.
“However, the fact that he drank alcohol and desired to commit suicide indicates that he will have no advantage in this life.
“I encourage them to join the Christian Union and learn more about Christianity.
“They should be saved, and once they are, everything will go on as expected,” he said.
