Man beaten by mob after reversing M-pesa transaction

There was drama in Nkubu town in Meru County when irate residents pounced on a man who reversed an Mpesa transaction.

The man was pounced on by an angry mob who worked on him after reversing Sh500 sent to a Mr. Mutwiri.

He was cornered and beaten up mercilessly before being ordered to pay back.

The suspect confirmed the incident saying he was drunk and accidentally sent Sh500 twice which prompted him to reverse the transaction.

Subscribers can cancel transactions within this period at no cost. Safaricom’s mobile application also allows users to confirm their intended recipient even before they input their personal identification number (PIN).

Some mobile phone subscribers spend money sent wrongly to their accounts instead of waiting for the sender to reverse the transaction.

Often, culprits often get away with it as Safaricom refers victims to report the matter to the police for investigations and prosecution.

Public are advised not to beat the suspects instead they should take them to court.

Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act says, “If you fail to reverse an M-Pesa payment that was made erroneously, you risk a two-year jail term, Sh200,000 fine or both.
