Martha Karua: It is unconstitutional for Uhuru to extend his term

Must read

She stressed that the Constitution does not allow a government led by President Uhuru Kenyatta to extend his term. “It is unconstitutional. The government cannot use the catastrophe to continue its rule. It is tantamount to prolonging the suffering of Kenyans and using public funds to enrich themselves. ”

“We urge citizens to wake up and put an end to this scourge. This government must realize that Kenyans will not tolerate a major betrayal which is a constitutional coup. What is happening is a constitutional revolution and we must end it, ”she said.

She cited the government as the main source of problems facing Kenyans in the current climate change and Covid-19 crisis.

According to her, the government, which is expected to solve the problems of the people, has now turned to the root of the problem during the corona virus and the rainy season.

She accused key actors in the National Committee on Security and the Covid-19 Control Committee of punishing residents in five closed counties, struggling to get home in the evening following an early evacuation.

“Stop fighting Kenyans. Strategies to facilitate transport should be developed based on the challenges of public transport and ongoing road construction in the city, ”she said.

The lawyer also criticized the Ministry of Internal Security headed by Dr Fred Matiang’i following a recent incident, in which residents from the five closed counties were forced to stay on the streets for several hours for violating an early curfew.

She argued that police officers had no legal authority to punish those who violated kafyu hours saying only a court could impose a penalty.

“I would help people get home, especially those who are a few minutes late. I would direct my officers to ensure that there is no traffic congestion from the station to the road.

“For those who appear to have been deliberately late, I would give them tickets to court the next day. You can’t keep people on the street until nightfall. You are not legally allowed to impose a penalty, only a court can punish. The police must stop abusing their power to arrest people and turn those who accuse, pass judgment and punish people, ”he said.

Ms Karua also opposed the move to evict residents from public land without giving them notice or alternative accommodation. due to mental stress.

“The government should give them notice and help the victims move to alternative accommodation. They just can’t disappear. The government was present when the people were building their homes and did not ban them at that time. The government has a responsibility, if indeed the land is public it needs to be developed now, ”she said.
