The alleged perpetrator of the armed attack in San Jose, California, committed suicide, after killing at least eight people earlier today (Wednesday, May 26) at the site of a public transport company, local authorities said.
” I know for a fact that when the suspect realized there were law enforcement officers at the scene, he committed suicide ,” Santa Clara County Sheriff Lori Smith told a news conference.
At least eight people have been killed when a gunman opened fire inside a train station in San Jose , California, the county sheriff’s office said.
” I can confirm that there are eight dead so far. And one suspect is dead, “said Russell Davis, a deputy sheriff in Santa Clara County, warning that the death toll could rise.
Davis said the perpetrator was working at the depot .
The incident happened shortly before 07:00 in the morning (17:00 Greek time) at a train station managed by the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), near the city’s main airport.
” A horrific tragedy happened today and our thoughts go to the VTA family ,” Glenn Hendricks, chairman of the VTA board, told a news conference.
He added that the shootings took place in a part of the depot where the workers are doing vehicle maintenance work and the perpetrator did not enter the operation and control center.
” We are going through a very dark time ,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liscardo told a news conference. ” We will do everything possible to ensure that this never happens again in our city. “
