A massive fire gutted houses in Imenti-Meru County, burning down 7 rental houses and rendering many homeless, early on Sunday (May 30).
The catastrophic fire broke out at the home of Mwiti near Junction, along Meru-Maura road.
The fire spread quickly, taking with it many houses before the fire brigade could even reach the location. It is reported that the firefighters arrived at the scene as soon as they got to know about the fire. Despite their best efforts, they could not keep the houses from burning down.
“I was called at 1:00 a.m., and when I arrived, there was only fire and smoke all over the houses. The firefighters responded and there were no casualties reported. It was claimed that the fire was caused by an electrical fault,” said an eyewitness.
“Because the firefighters arrived late and did not have enough water, we were unable to save anything. While putting out the fire, they ran out of water and went in search of more while the houses burned down,” said another eyewitness.
“The fire was started by an electrical fault caused by electric wires on poles. The poles are located near the houses, which included seven rental units,” said the owner, Mr. Jospeph.
“My house is located behind the houses that were burned down. When the fire-gutted houses, the only things we managed to save were the children and goats. Food, clothing, a bicycle, and the rest of the property were destroyed.
