Miathane Boys Secondary School in Meru county, Tigania-West region has maintained good performance after producing the two best candidates in the region in the just released 2020 KCSE exam results.
Two students who studied at the school scored A- (minus).
School Principal Kariuki Mwendia on Tuesday said the school posted an improvement this year, with 147 students qualifying for direct entry to university out of the 283 who sat for the exam.
“The total number of KCSE 2020 candidates was 283 compared to 265 for the KCSE 2019 exam. Among the 265 KCSE 2019 candidates, 83 were granted direct entry to university,” he said.
“We are very pleased with the KCSE 2020 results because there was an increase of 59 students who received direct entry to university. This year, we hope to do better. Our mean score target for the KCSE 2020 exam was 7.5.
“We fell short by 0.7 points, but we hope to make up for it this year.
The difficulty we face is a lack of teachers, facilities, and entry behavior,” he said.
Mr. Nathan Aritho, deputy principal, said students performed well this year and there was a lot of improvement.
“We posted 147 students who qualified for the university as they had attained grade c+ and above.
“The two students who scored grade A- (minus) were let down by the English subject, having scored low grades. We hope they will be enrolled in good courses at the university,” he said.
The school posted a mean score of 6.753, up from 5.8206 the previous year, with a division of 0.9347.
The school did not post an A (plain), but posted two A- (minus), as well as 15 B+ (plus), 28 B (plain), 38 B- (minus), 64 C+ (plus), 76 C (plain), 44 C- (minus), 9 D+ (plus), 5 D (plain), and 1 D- (plain).
“The difficulty we faced was a lack of contact with the students as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Students’ study habits deteriorated,” Mr. Nathan told BaiteTv.
“However, when they returned to school, we were able to clear the cobwebs from their minds. We hoped for a mean score of 8.2 to 8.5 but still, we are pleased with the KCSE class of 2020,” he added.
