‘Leaders are ruining our markets’: Struggling Miraa farmers decry

Must read

Farmers in Meru County, especially those involved in the Miraa farming, are complaining of post-harvest losses due to lack of support and markets to sell their crop.

Speaking at Kawilu-Igembe in Meru county on April 10, 2021, Mr. Ntongai told Baite Tv that the lack of support and market has messed up the business. He said that a bundle of Miraa used to cost Ksh 4000 but it is currently selling at Ksh 20.

Another farmer, Mwiti said: “Miraa is occasionally blocked at the Kenya borders, leaving us without a market. farmers have been stigmatized to the point where if you arrive at a hotel before ordering food and have Miraa with you, you are told to pay first,” he said.

“Because the county government failed to provide water in the area, we have no other crop to farm. The wealthy who can afford to drill boreholes have done a lot to help themselves with water,” he said.

“We implore Bishop Hon Kawira Mwangaza to assist us because the Miraa crop cannot support the cost of living,” he said.

Another resident said: “We pledge to vote for Bishop Hon Kawira Mwangaza in the 2022 general elections because she possesses leadership qualities. In comparison to the male leaders, we elected, her track record of development has inspired us. When we elect our leaders, all they do is close their car windows when they see us.”
