Wilson Sossion bowed out as the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) leadership.
While making the announcement at Windsor, he said he shall continue serving Kenyans in other capacities and for the remaining period of the 12th parliament devote himself at the National Assembly undivided.
The Nominated MP pledged to remain loyal to Kenyan National Union of teachers and to always be available to advise and support the leadership of the union.
Sossion resigned at a time when teachers are set to go to elections tomorrow and they had from today 8:00 AM till 5:00 PM to submit their nomination papers.
“I have today decided that in the interest of Kenyan National Union of teachers continuity, it’s a membership, myself, I hereby today the 25th day June 2021 bow out of Kenya National Union of Teachers leadership honorably,’ he said.
“All the unions in the public service must be busted to an extent that they cannot work. This is not good for the economy is not good for workers and it’s not good for the country,” he said.
He wished to restate that KNUT members deserve credit for the restrain and sobriety they’ve shown in the face of open provocation and frustration by the government.
He saluted all the members of match including his colleagues in the leadership who he said they’ve endured for two years without salaries.
“It is the greatest endurance without the medical cover. I know and I salute the late executive secretary of KNUT Narok Branch who died at home because of lack of medical cover and we’ve lost many others,” he said.
“I urge them to remain resilient to the end. I trust that the government of Kenya, as I exit because there’s always been an argument that as long as Sossion stays, the Government will not release union dues. I’m making this passionate appeal which international unions have done so, through writings to the Government of Kenya, I trust that the government of Kenya will find it necessary to allow union dues to flow to the Kenyan National Union of Teachers again,” he said.
“So that the leadership and the workers can earn a salary and can leave decent and the union can freely organize. I shall continue serving Kenyans in other capacities and for the remaining period of the 12th parliament, I shall devote myself to my work at the National Assembly undivided. So my business now is in Parliament. So you may be seeing a politician in the making,’ he said.
“Transition is real. I think I’ve grown, I’ve outgrown the Kenyan National Union of Teachers and now I should move fully to the political world and we participate in shipping and promoting democracy and good governance and representation of the people in this country,” he said.
I will be representing workers, teachers included in my position in the National Assembly. You can be very sure I will be in National Assembly during the 13th session. For those who will be elected on Saturday the 26, that is tomorrow, the nomination have been done and elections will be done tomorrow and it is in-person voting,” he said.
I wish you well and I urge you never to be compromised by any authority and don’t be converted into tools of commerce. Always respect the mission of the union and the mission of the union indeed within its core values is always to be bold and courageous on the rights of teachers of which I’m happy. I’ve done it well and I’ve done my best,” he said.
“I may not be perfect but I think I’ve done what was humanly possible within my knowledge and ability. Champion the interest and aspirations of teachers. Forge unity, we need solidarity in the labor movement. The anarchy third has been injected by the government must be resisted,” he said.
He urged members to forge unity and to never betray one another. He hailed the media houses saying that without them, they could not work and communicate
