Protesters took to the streets again in several Spanish cities on Sunday demanding justice for the murder of young gay man Samuel Luiz, who was beaten to death about a week ago in an alleged homophobic attack that shocked Spain.
Crowds gathered in a central square in Madrid, holding placards reading “Some people are LOATKI. Get used to it! ”While activists shouted slogans waving flags of pride, marching through the streets of Almeria (south) and A Coruιαa (northwest), where the crime took place. Similar demonstrations took place over the weekend in other cities, such as Barcelona (northeast) and Seville (south).
Samuel Louise, a 24-year-old assistant nurse, was found unconscious in the early hours of Saturday, July 3, outside a nightclub in A Coru .a. The perpetrators had beaten him to death and rescuers were unable to bring him back to life. According to the autopsy-necropsy, he died from a craniocerebral fracture caused by a kick to the head.
The news of his assassination sparked a series of demonstrations and political reactions throughout Spain.
His relatives claim that his killers targeted him because of his sexual orientation.
Police have arrested six people, including two minors, as part of their investigation into the crime.
At present, the authorities do not characterize the crime as “homophobic” but consider that all possibilities are open.
Miguel Serrano, 22, stressed that he took part in the demonstration in Madrid “because it could be me” in place of Louise. “Obviously it was a homophobic attack, because of the insults that were said,” he said.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has condemned the assassination, calling it a “savage and relentless act”.
