The killings may be linked to a dispute between criminal gangs operating in the area, according to the official. The investigation is ongoing.

Violence related to gang activity in some parts of Mexico has increased recently, including in the popular tourist areas of the state of Quintana Roo.

On Wednesday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said National Guard troops would be deployed permanently to Cancun and its environs following the escalation of violence, including the deaths of two tourists at the Tulum resort who were trapped in retaliation.

As of September, 21,495 people had been killed this year in gang-related violence, an average of about 2,400 a month, according to the government.
