Three workmen were critically injured when a three-storey county assembly building under construction in Nyamira county collapsed last evening.
Hundreds of people were trapped as the building collapsed about 5 p.m. They were freed with injuries.
At the time of the collapse, the structure, which had been budgeted at Ksh379 million, was halfway completed.
The county assembly’s headquarters were supposed to be located there.
Nyamira county commissioner Amos Mariba confirmed at the scene that 51 persons were hurt and treated at the Nyamira hospital.
The three people who suffered critical injuries were sent to the hospital for CT scans and chest X-rays. Fortunately, no one was killed, and all of the patients are in good health.
According to the county commissioner, the cause of the collapse is being investigated, and a report will be produced soon.
