Authorities are investigating circumstances under which a police officer was shot dead by his colleagues.

Corporal Fanuel Abongo was shot in the ribs by his colleague and succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night during an operation at a Weighbridge.

The officer behind the shooting was arrested amid probe into the scuffle.

Officials said a team of officers manning a mobile Weighbridge on Ngong-Suswa Road came across a lorry that was carrying sand, which they suspected was overloaded.

The officers said the driver refused to stop when flanked down, which prompted a brief chase and confrontation using a pickup.

It was in the process that the driver of the said lorry reversed hitting the pickup, which carried at least three police officers.

This prompted one of the officers to accidentally discharge AK47 rifle hitting Abongo in the ribs.

The officer was apparently seated behind the driver’s seat.

Abongo was rushed to Ngong sub county hospital and later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The officer was disarmed and weapon sent for ballistic tests.

Police authorities said they want to understand why the officers had to chase the lorry in the middle of the night when they could simply take its details for a later action.

A team of detectives from Ngong DCI is investigating the incident.

There have been complaints from drivers using the route on the conduct of the personnel manning the mobile Weighbridge. This at one point prompted protests from the drivers who claimed harassment from the personnel.
