Poor roads: residents lament government neglect

Must read

Residents of Mitarune community in Mikumbune-Imenti of Meru county are lamenting over the poor state of their road.

The dilapidated state of the road has brought disquiet among residents and motorists blaming both county and national governments on its poor state.

A resident who lives in the area, Boniface Mwenda, said the bad state of the road had led to passengers on motorcycles falling with screams being heard from a distance.

“Residents and a large number of businessmen use this road to get to work. Because it is impossible to travel by motorcycle or car, residents use an alternate factory road,” he said.

“Tea farmers in the area are accustomed to rushing to the scene of an accident when passengers fall while being transported on motorcycles. The exhaust injures the passengers.

“We want to know what the MCA is doing now that he has been elected to the seat. We voted for Makasi knowing that his grandmother lives nearby, and we hoped that you would assist us.

“You should have shown us mercy by grinding the road as a token of our gratitude for voting for you. Do you want us to put you in the NO PEEU category?

“We voted for you in the hopes that our tomatoes and tea would be easily transported to the market. Because the motorcycles were unable to transport our harvest, we were forced to carry it to a location where they could travel,” he said.

Another resident, Ponseta, said that the road has had no significant impact on them over the last four years that she have lived in this area.

“Makasi has promised to fix the road, but we have yet to see it. There is no other road in this area that is as bad as ours in terms of condition,” she said.

“I believe the road is cursed because there is one particular spot that never dries out when it rains. Lorries delivering tea to farms are unable to reach the farms.

“When you arrive at the location while carrying heavy items, you cannot find anyone to assist you in crossing a trench.

“I’m forced to carry my produce on my back because a motorcycle will topple over due to a large hole nearby,” she said.

Another resident, Martin Gikunda, said that children who go to school always fall on the spot and have to return home to change.

“I went to see an elderly lady who had also fallen at the same spot the other day. She had a leg injury,” he said.

Another resident, Susan, said that for the past five years, the road had been in disrepair. She pleaded with Governor Kiraitu and MCA Makasi to repair the road.
