Tunisian President  Kais Saeed announced tonight that he was suspending parliament and ousting Prime Minister Hisham Masisi following a day of protests against Tunisian leaders.

Klakson were heard in the streets shortly after this announcement.

The announcement comes after demonstrations in several cities yesterday, Sunday, despite significant police growth to curb travel. The protesters are mainly calling for the “dissolution of Parliament”.

“Coup against revolution and the Constitution”

Tunisian Parliament Speaker Rachid Ganoussi has accused President Kais Saeed of plotting a “coup against the revolution and the Constitution” after Saeed said he had suspended parliament and the government.

“We believe that the institutions are still in place and that Ennahda supporters and the Tunisian people will defend the revolution,” Ganushi, who leads the moderate Islamist Ennahda party, said by telephone.

Calls for demonstrations on July 25, the day of the celebration of the Republic, have been circulating on Facebook for many days, by various groups.

They demanded inter alia a change of the constitution and a transitional period that will leave a large space in the army, while keeping the President Said as head of state
