MAJIRA MAARA, Tharaka Nithi County – Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets as angry protests erupted in Majira Maara village after a 20-year-old man was shot dead by a police officer.
The unrest in Majira Maara village in Tharaka Nithi County came hours after another police officer attached to Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu’s home in Kimachia village in Meru County shot a man twice in the back of the head in a cold-blood murder.
In Majira Maara village, smoke billowed as a line of police officers fired rubber bullets and chemical agents at protesters, some of whom lobbed rocks at the police.
The man killed by police was identified by members of the community as Brian Munene, 20. Chogoria Ward MCA Hon. Margret Gitari while addressing protesters said that the deceased allegedly confronted the officer with a fork spoon, prompting him to shoot him.

“We demand to know whether or not the police officer who shot the man is in jail. I’m requesting that the officer in charge provide me with the name of the killer cop, after which I’ll follow up to ensure that justice is served,” Margret said.
A government official said investigations will be carried out to ascertain the truth of the matter, and urged protesters to refrain from acts of violence.
“The police have no intention of engaging members of the community in running battles because of the actions of a single officer. If the officer is found guilty, he will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said.
The body of 20-year-old Brian Munene was taken to Chuka County Referral Hospital mortuary Referal hospital.
