Deputy President William Ruto has lashed out at opposition leaders, saying they regret his contempt for his campaign to boost the economy of low-income Kenyans, especially, saying they have failed to turn it off.
Dr Ruto said his opponents had realized that they could not stop the campaign, and had now started talking about economic issues instead of changing the Constitution.
“When we first started talking about the people, they ignored me when I told them that the 2022 government would be made up of victims. We must begin to discuss the issues of the lower classes. That is why we said we would change the debate as Kenyans, ”said Dr Ruto when he met vendors and small business owners in Machakos.
The Deputy President questioned that when he started his campaign his opponents said it was to incite the poor against the rich; and now that it has succeeded, they are shocked.
He added that when he met with lower-class Kenyans to discuss how to strengthen their economy, his opponents were discussing how to change the Constitution to create more leadership positions.
“Now they are meeting in venues to discuss how they will form political alliances and divide positions while we help the masses strengthen the economy to enable everyone,” he said.
Dr Ruto was referring to Wiper party leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetangula and Kanu’s Gideon Moi, who have been meeting to form their One Kenya Alliance (OKA) coalition.

The ODM party, led by former prime minister Raila Odinga, has also been in talks with the ruling Jubilee coalition of President Uhuru Kenyatta, with the aim of uniting ahead of the 2022 general election.
However, talks between ODM and Jubilee have been put on hold for some time.
“Reggae stopped. I assure you that we will not change the Constitution, we will change the economy, ”he explained.
The Deputy President was accompanied by Machakos Urban MP Mr Victor Munyaka, Nimrod Mbai of Kitui East and Vincent Musyoka of Mwala.
He said the handicrafts and the BBI disrupted the Jubilee government’s development agenda. “Our plan for 2018 was to build affordable housing, commercial agriculture, universal health, industrial welfare and education for our children.
“But some people joined the government through the back door and told us that the plans were not immediate. They told us the emergency was a project to change the Constitution that has been going on for four years now. God has been on our side and reggae has stood, ”said Dr Ruto.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader has been boycotting President Kenyatta’s ceremonies since he was ousted from the government in protest of the impeachment.
“I want to tell you that Kenyans know their problem is not ethnicity, the Constitution or positions. But the economy is declining, and in order to deal with this we must start at the grassroots level, ”he said.
He slammed opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Mr Musyoka for urging Kenyans to apologize “for joining the government illegally.”
The two have been supporting the BBI and have been given international responsibilities.
