The Senate Committee on Health chaired by Sen (Dr) Michael Mbito held robust discussions with NHIF led by Board Chair, Hon Lewis Nguyai and CEO Dr Peter Kamunyo on the NHIF (Amendment) Bill, 2021.
The said Bill was considered and passed with amendments by the National Assembly on 29th September, 2021 and was forwarded to the Senate on 13th October, 2021.
The Bill aims to amend the NHIF Act, 1998, to establish the National Health Scheme and to enhance the mandate and capacity of the National Hospital Insurance Fund to facilitate and deliver Universal Health Coverage.
Aware that the journey to UHC started in 1966 when NHIF was established under CAP 255, the Senate Health Committee committed to enriching the Bill that’s poised to be the culmination of the post-independent journey by guaranteeing UHC and protect against the catastrophic effect of out-of-pocket spending on healthcare.
