Seven dead in the crash of a small aircraft

The twin-engine crashed into a grove in a settlement in Piracicaba, about 150 miles (150 km) from Sao Paulo, killing all on board.

Seven people, including five members of the same family, were killed today in Brazil , after a small plane crashed shortly after taking off, near Sao Paulo (southeast), according to the fire brigade.

One of the victims was businessman Celso Silveira Melo Filio, brother of the owner of Cosan , one of the largest biofuel companies in Brazil , the company said in a press release.

“Celso Silveira Melo Filio, a shareholder in the group, was aboard the plane that crashed this morning in Piracicaba, as did his wife, three children, the captain and the co-pilot,” Cosan said.

Authorities have not yet provided information on the cause of the crash, which occurred just 15 seconds after takeoff, according to the Piracicamba municipal authority. The aircraft was headed to the state of Para (north).
