Signs of political divorce looming in OKA, Kanu

Must read

Plans to legitimize the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) were hit hard after Kanu’s party said it had no plans to end its alliance with the ruling Jubilee party.

The OKA leaders are Musalia Mudavadi (Amani National Congress), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya) and Gideon Moi (Kanu).

According to the law, no party can be in two alliances at the same time.

Mr Mudavadi, Mr Musyoka and Mr Wetang’ula have said they will withdraw from the NASA alliance which they say is part of their history.

“What is left now is the final decision to bury the union which is to monitor the use of money,” they said.

But Kanu’s secretary general Nick Salat yesterday said the party’s alliance with Jubilee had been endorsed by the National Congress of Representatives (NDC) and they were the ones who should pass the by-elections.

Mr Salat made the remarks a day after OKA, of which Kanu is a member, announced that the independence party must withdraw from its alliance with Jubilee before formally joining the new coalition.

“You cannot be a member of two unions at the same time under the law. This must be understood. Therefore, Kanu will leave Jubilee and it will be officially announced, ”said Wiper deputy chairman

Mutula Kilonzo Jnr who read the statement on behalf of the OKA leaders.

He added: “If we form One Kenya Alliance, the leaders of all three parties must leave Nasa and Kanu must leave Jubilee. Every coalition, including Jubilee, will end the next general election. ”

Mr Moi said it was too early to discuss Kanu’s move to withdraw from his alliance with Jubilee.

“The question is not relevant at the moment but there are ongoing talks,” said Mr Moi.

But yesterday, Mr Salat told Nation Today that the Kanu and Jubilee alliance lasts until the end of the current parliamentary term and they have no reason to break up early.

“Right now, we are all preparing for the 2022 general election and we should not think of anything else. In addition, our contract with Jubilee lasts until 2022 and we can join another alliance if necessary, ”he said.

He said that Kanu was not ready to stop cooperating with the government.
