Six arrests for the assassination of the President of Haiti

Six of the men who assassinated President Jouvenel Moise have been arrested by Haitian authorities.

The country’s police have arrested six of the men who assassinated the Haitian president, while searching for the “brains” of the operation, as announced by the police chief.

Among the six arrested is an American citizen of Haitian descent, Minister Matthias Pierre, who is in charge of electoral issues, told AFP. Charles called on citizens to cooperate with the security services and not to cause unrest. The reason for this appeal was the fact that a crowd gathered outside the police station where the detainees were being held. The crowd shouted “burn them” and set fire to a vehicle, believing that it belonged to the perpetrators. Prime Minister Claude Joseph also called on citizens to hand over any suspects to authorities and not to lynch them.

The 53-year-old president was assassinated in the early hours of Wednesday morning by a group of “professional assassins”, as authorities call them. Earlier, the UN special envoy for Haiti, Helen La Lim, said that many “possible perpetrators” of the murder had “taken refuge in two buildings” in the capital and were “surrounded by police”.
“Four members of the group that broke into the presidential residence were killed by police and six others are being held in custody,” he told reporters in New York in a video call from Port-au-Prince. He added that the number of suspects who have been surrounded by police is more than six.

The former US diplomat, speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council, which was convened by the US and Mexico, said that she has no information about the identity of the perpetrators. “We have to wait for the Haitian police to continue their investigations. “We are facing a very serious situation,” he stressed. La Lim estimated that caretaker Prime Minister Claude Joseph was representing Haiti’s political authorities, as the new prime minister, Ariel Henry, who was appointed by Moyes on Monday, had not yet been sworn in. He invoked Article 149 of the Constitution of Haiti. Ariel Henry disputes Claude Joseph’s right to take power after the president’s death.

“If there is to be a change in this process, it must be the result of a political agreement between the parties,” said Helen La Lim, noting that Claude Joseph had said he was “open to dialogue”. The envoy also said that when she spoke to Claude Joseph on Wednesday, he told her he would try to meet the timetable for the parliamentary and presidential elections, the first round of which is scheduled for September 26. “It is up to the Haitian government and the people to work to ensure that these elections are held and that the people can elect their leaders,” he added.
