The Speaker of the National Assembly the Hon. Justin B.N. Muturi, EGH, this afternoon held talks with the Speaker of the Parliament of Zimbabwe the Hon.Jacob Francis Mudenda who is in the country on an official visit.
The parties discussed various issues of mutual concern and joint collaborations on among other things, training, parliamentary practice and governance.
Specifically, the Zimbabwean delegation was keen to request for the support of the Kenyan delegation to the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) for the position of President.
The delegation informed Speaker Muturi that the government of Zimbabwe had nominated the Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira to vie for the position of PAP President.
While seeking the support of the Kenyan Delegation, the Hon. Mudenda noted that there was need for the respect of the principle of rotation in the position of the Pap President in line with the other organs of the AU as well as international best practice.
This would avoid unnecessary disagreement during elections of the Bureau.On his part, the Speaker Muturi noted the need for consensus in the operations of the institution.
He observed that the PAP is an integral organ of the African governance setup and thus ought to lead by example.
He committed to convey the request to the Kenyan delegation to PAP as well as to other delegations within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa fraternity in his capacity as Chairperson.
The Speaker of the Parliament of Zimbabwe was accompanied by the Zimbabwe High Commissioner to Kenya, Her Excellency Ambassador Winpeg Moyo.
