Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, has called a special House session for Wednesday to hear the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee’s (JLAC) report on Martha Koome’s screening for appointment as Chief Justice.

In the coming weeks, Martha Koome, Kenya’s first female chief justice, is set to make history.

She has an outstanding career spanning three decades since graduating in law from the University of Nairobi in 1986 – and has received numerous other degrees over the years. She is married with three children.

In 1988, she began as a legal associate before becoming the managing partner of her own law firm in 1993. During the regime of President Daniel arap Moi, she became well-known for her defense of human rights, serving political prisoners in her private practice.
