Stakeholder committees on Migration Management participate in a consultative forum

Senators and Members of the National Assembly drawn from stakeholder committees on Migration Management – led by Sen (Dr) Alice Milgo (Chair, Education) and Hon Edward Kaunya (Ag Chair, Administration and National Security) – are currently participating in a consultative forum on the Global Compact for Migration and the National Migration Policy.

Human mobility is a driver of socio-economic and political change locally, nationally and internationally. The dynamism of migration is influenced by existing economic disparities, environmental changes, intolerances, and socio-political factors.

Kenya has experienced the effects of migration as a destination, transit and origin of migrants. As an origin, the country benefits from diaspora remittances that have contributed to economic development in households and the nation’s GDP.

The importance of migration can therefore not be gainsaid. As such, a clear framework to fully operationalize migration governance through the involvement of all relevant migration actors is instrumental.

The forum is expected to generate robust national dialogue on the government’s efforts in migration governance and advocate for strengthening the existing structures through an overarching policy that will guarantee a safe space for migrant communities and influence other sectorial migration policies.

The forum is organized by the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration (NCM) in collaboration with International Organization for Migration (IOM).
