Lawrence Warunge, the self-confessed killer who shocked the country by killing four family members and a farmhand in Kiambu County in January 2021, is now expected to face murder charges on Wednesday, April 14.
A psychiatric report from Mathari Mental Hospital revealed that he is now mentally fit to stand trial, which is a new development.
After being treated at the medical facility since January, Warunge’s mental health was confirmed.
Previously, when he appeared in Kiambu Law Courts, the Director of Public Prosecutions urged that he be held in custody at Mathari Mental Hospital to allow him to receive treatment after an indication that he was mentally unstable.
The psychiatric test is required for all High Courts handling murder cases in order to ensure that a suspect has the capacity to plead guilty to murder charges.
Warunge is now expected to face multiple murder charges in the deaths of his father, Nicholas Njenga Warunge, mother Annie, brothers Maxwell and Christian, and their mason, James Kinyanjui.
