Ten people, mostly women, were killed when a landslide caused by heavy rains hit two settlements in southwestern Colombia, a local government official said on Tuesday.

On Monday night, a landslide buried two settlements in Mayama, a town of 7,000 in Narino County (near the border with Ecuador), said local official Hader Gaviria.Remaining Time-0:00FullscreenMute

“Unfortunately, so far we have four dead,” Mr Gaviria said yesterday at noon; later, search and rescue services revised the tally to the worst, with ten dead, eight of them women. Some of the victims were refugees from Venezuela.

Nine people were rescued, two seriously injured. “We assume other people have been trapped,” said Mr Gaviria.

In the two settlements that were crushed, there was a small inn, a bar and a billiard room. The landslide also disrupted traffic on a section of the highway trying to clear construction machinery.

Heavy rains have been falling in Colombia for days.
