A photo showing a small deer burning after a human attack has won the top spot in a pan-Asian wildlife photography competition. The photo, captured by wildlife photographer Biplab Hazra, shows a little deer and its mother running down a road in West Bengal, India, with the little one set on fire after flaming tar balls and crackers hurled by a fierce crowd of residents. The photo titled “Hell is here” won Sanctuary’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year award

Speaking to the Indian Express, Hazra said the two elephants “somehow survived” and did not fail to point out that such attacks are common in West Bengal, noting that “this kind of humiliation is routine”. It is worth noting that such clashes between humans and elephants are a common occurrence, as elephants are responsible for the deaths of many people in West Bengal and very often humans attack animals to kill them. Hazra recalls the little elephant screaming and being “confused” as he left, adding: “For these clever, kind, social animals that have roamed this earth for centuries, hell is here and now.”
