Taliban officials have issued a ban on shaving their beards in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, local media reported today.
Taliban Information and Culture Director Hafiz Rashid Helmand told the Etilaatroz newspaper that the decision was made by Taliban religious police during a meeting with barber shop owners in the province.
In an official letter issued by the Taliban and circulated on social media, provincial officials in the province warned barbershops of the consequences if they were found to have shaved someone’s beard.
A spokesman for the Taliban has not responded to a request from the German agency for comment.
