Airbnb paid $ 7 million to a tourist who allegedly raped her under the threat of a knife, in a rented apartment in New York.
According to Bloomberg, the Australian tourist was compensated for the attack she received on New Year’s Eve 2015.
The victim and her friends had taken the keys to the apartment from a nearby store that night, the report said. The suspect allegedly made a key to the apartment, where he entered before the attack. The woman returned shortly after midnight, with the 24-year-old suspect hiding in the bathroom.
Junior Lee, who faces charges of sexual assault, pleads not guilty but remains in custody.
Following the alleged attack, an Airbnb security team contacted local police for assistance and transported the victim to a hotel. He also offered to cover some expenses, such as the counseling and the tourist trip of the tourist’s mother from Australia.
According to Bloomberg, under the $ 7 million deal, the victim can not accuse or sue Airbnb or the owner of the apartment where the incident took place. The deal is said to have taken place two years after the alleged attack.
“In cases of sexual assault, in the agreements we make, victims can speak freely about their experiences, including the attack in New York,” Ben Bright, an Airbnb spokesman, told the New York Post.
