One person has been killed and six others rescued after a lift boat used to service oil rigs capsized amid a storm south of Port Forson in the Gulf of Mexico. US Coast Guard.
About 12 people are still missing after the 39-meter-long merchant boat capsized at around 4.30pm local time yesterday, officials said.
Two Coast Guard vessels, a military helicopter, an aircraft and a small fleet of private volunteer vessels are involved in the search operation, said Captain Will Watson.
“Unfortunately, a man was pulled dead from the surface of the water,” he explained, adding that the wind speed was 129 km / h at the time of the accident.
Two people were rescued by the coast guard and four others were picked up by other boats, he noted.
“My heart and the hearts of our team are with the families,” Watson said, adding that they were working to locate and rescue other survivors.
According to the US Meteorological Agency, stormy winds, accompanied by hail and floods, are expected to continue to hit southeastern Louisiana.
