A cholera epidemic in southern Niger has killed 12 people and infected 201 others in three parts of the country, with torrential rains contributing to further spread of the disease, the country’s health minister announced today. .

Nigeria ‘s southern neighbor, Nigeria , is also facing a cholera outbreak that has killed at least 653 people since March in 22 of its 36 states.

Nigerian health authorities believe the two epidemics are linked.

“Most cases are linked to an epidemic that has been raging for several months in neighboring, cross-border areas, where there is a significant mix of cross-border populations,” Health Minister Indy Ilyasu Mainasara said in a statement.

The previous cholera epidemic in Niger was recorded in the same areas in 2018, according to him.
