An overturned lorry transporting cement left two people injured and one man dead along Meru-Nairobi Highway in Tharaka Nithi County.

The lorry overturned, spilling all of its load, on Meru-Nairobi Highway near the Nithi bridge.

One of the passengers was transported to Chuka hospital with injuries that were considered critical while another was found dead in water.

“Some of the passengers narrowly escaped death, and it was only God’s intervention that kept them alive. I’ve never seen a lorry fly so high after hitting a stone barricade,” said an eyewitness.

“The lorry was transporting cement from Marima to Mitheru. It collided with a small vehicle before crashing into a stone barricade. It overturned downhill several times and landed in the river.

“There were no fatalities among the passengers in the small car. The driver claimed he struggled with the steering to keep the passengers alive.

“Accidents happen every month, and the barricade is constantly being repaired. The area should be marked as a black spot. Drivers who are unfamiliar with the road drive at high speeds, and when they reach the black spot while driving downhill, brakes fail. They lose control of the vehicle,” said another eyewitness.
