The Ugandan government announced yesterday Sunday that all educational institutions will be closed for almost a month and a half, as they have recently recorded a high number of cases of the new coronavirus.
President Yueri Museveni clarified during his televised sermon that he ordered the schools to be closed immediately for 42 days from today at 08:00.
“All schools should be closed tomorrow (today Monday). “All teachers should be fully immunized, otherwise they will not be allowed to teach,” Museveni said.
The president noted that a worrying number of infections have been recorded in schools, which have reached a total of 948 in 43 educational institutions in 22 regions.
“We believe this number is much higher, but most schools do not report cases to the health authorities,” Museveni added.
“The high number of infections in schools is mainly attributed to the poor observance of the measures, the insufficient water supply and sewerage infrastructure and the overcrowded students in some of them,” the head of state acknowledged.
Ugandan authorities closed schools last year because of the pandemic. Later they reopened them in phases.
As of Sunday, the new coronavirus pandemic in the African country had, according to official data, reached 383 deaths due to COVID-19 out of a total of 52,935 SARS-CoV-2 infections since March 2020, when the first case.
