Kiirua police have detained the Chairman of Kiirua Market Nyumba Kumi on allegations that he raped a teenager.
Police were told that on July 7, the girl was at the suspect’s house in Kiirua Market in Meru County with the door locked from the inside.
“When the assistant chief and I arrived on the scene, we found an enraged mob baying for his blood. The suspect refused to open the door when we asked him to,” said the Area manager, Kiirua Market.
“We called the police who arrived and broke the door. The suspect identified as Steve claimed that he hadn’t seen the victim in a long time. The victim’s parents claimed they saw their child enter the house and demanded that it be searched,” he said.
The victim was discovered inside the house and was safely returned to her parents.
“I received a phone call informing me that my daughter had been seen entering the suspect’s house. I requested asked my wife to rush to the scene because I was at work in Meru Town,” said the victim’s father.
“When I arrived on the scene, I met my wife and residents encircling the house where the suspect had locked himself inside with my daughter. He had refused to open the door,” he said.

Mercy, a resident of Kiiru Market, was shocked to learn that a Nyumba Kumi elder had been involved in a rape case with a teenager. She said that the victim had completed her primary education and was yet to join Form 1.
“The suspect is a respected chairman of Nyumba Kumi in Kiirua Market. He should be protecting our children and ensuring the community is safe. It’s a shame because Nyumba Kumi members regarded him as an elder,” said Mercy
“The suspect was known for bribing teenagers in exchange for sexual favors and has never been caught. He is also accused of sexually assaulting the victim earlier after bribing her and claiming to provide her with counseling services,” she said.
According to the victim’s parents, their daughter was not suffering emotionally or psychologically, necessitating the services of a counselor.
“When the suspect sees young men with girls, he chases them away, only to be left with them to seek sexual favors. I implore the authorities to ensure that justice is served, as this will serve as a lesson to men who are unable to raise a family,” said Makena, Another resident of Kiirua Market.
“It will also serve as a lesson to men who abandon their families to assault girls young girls sexually,” said Makena.
A neighbor said that she had armed herself with a stick to use to give the suspect a good beating once he unlocked the door. She’d rather he gets a life sentence.
According to a resident, the suspect is not married and has a history of sexually assaulting young girls. When he comes across women who do not respond to his greeting, he assaults them.
